Up to date info from 2012 excavation
- 8/IX 2012: We did receive information that water level of Mohelno reservoir will be this day lower than usually. Therefore we had prepared survey. We had discovered a new concentration of artifacts within intact sediments near two structures constructed from flat stones - a stone pavement? This area will be subject of cleaning and documenting in a near future - when beach will be dryier. We had continued digging at area of test pit 2, from where we have obtained over 20 artifacts from intact muddy sedimets. In addition, we have tried snorcheling in order to look on channels hidden bellow water level. In fact, we had put down foudations of under-water archaeology in the Czech Republic.
- 4/IX 2012 afternoon: Backfilled. Gone! We have got 111 artifacts. And some tools! We have washed 399 buckets of sediment, 10 liters each - ca. 4000 liters.
- 4/IX 2012: As diging going deeper and deeper, our tripod is going lower and lower. We cleaned a profile 3 m as long and prepared it for photography (inserting nails for rectification). The profile is composed of three layers including artifacts. However, this year the majority came from the bottom of lower soil horizon. Our small digging team celabrated finishing and prepared themselves for backfilling of ca. 4 cubic metres of sediments.
- 3/IX 2012: We had continued and had touched the underlying Cenozoic sands.
- 2/IX 2012: We have restored excavating. We are going deeper and deeper, in one sector we met tertiarry stuff. We have excavated to end scrapers supplemented by dozens of artifacts.
- 1/IX 2012: After the rainy night, we woke as up to rainy moorning and faced to muddy field. However, we were able to continue slowly afernoon.
- 31/VIII 2012: Finally the weather is more suitable - not so hot, cloudy, often rainfals. We have got a first tool - a distal fragment of the Jerzmanowice-type point!
- 30/VIII 2012: We are going deeper and deeper. We have cleaned the frost wedge documented on profile last year.
- 29/VIII 2012: We are living in tents near the site, cooking and relaxing near hearth. A nice view to moon through the trees.
- 28/VIII 2012: Sunny and hot day. We had finished first hundred of buckets and have over ten artifacts.
- 27/VIII 2012: We are leaving our headquarters in Brno and start moving all equipment and us to Želešice at 7.15 am. Weather is OK, no rain nor hot, we hope to be able to begin digging today. Piknik had begun!
- 3/VIII 2012: The Zelešice-Hoynerhügel field was harvested and is ready for coming excavation.
- 31/VII-2/VIII 2012: We excavated test pit at the site of Podstránská. We cleaned section with ice wedges filled by calcareous sediment with Bohunician artifacts. Bellow the top soil was documented colluvial deposit with aurignacian artifacts. In addition, we documented profile in construction pit on the margin of the site and found one artifact in situ. Other artifacts were collected within remnoved sediments.
- 25/VII 2012: We visited Želeč excavation Open Day. There were new diddger test pits dug and more insitu artifacts in the lower part of soil sediments were excavated.
- You are invited for Pod hradem Cave Open Day on July 31, 2012, at 10:00 am.
- You are invited for Želeč Open Day on July 25, 2012, at 10:30 am.
- Two excavation seasons at Pod Hradem have uncovered a stratigraphic profile spanning the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic transition, as well as the periods before and after the
transition. A plethora of analyses, which are often used as proxies in palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimate investigations are revealing
information about the natural environment in the vicinity of the cave during Oxygen Isotope Stage 3. Most layers have also produced a weak archaeological signature.
- 14/VII 2012: In a rainy weather our small team excavated site Mohelno-Plevovce, where (finally!) the artifacts were excavated within intact sediments. The collection of 55 Late Gravetian or Epigravettian artifacts including three backed bladelets scattered within colluvial sediments was excavated. Additional surface survey yielded a collection of ca 20 artifacs including items produced from rock crystal. The surface survey was aided by water pump powered by power generator.
- 13/VII 2012: On monday, July 9, the excavation of the EUP site Želeč begun. The area excavated during 2010 and 2011 was enlarged downslope. The excavation yielded a small collection of lithics
- There is barley in Želešice field, the expected harvest time is the end of August.
- Here will be informations concerning planning of excavations as well as actual informations from excavations.
