Up to date info from 2017 excavation
- 7-8/VIII 2017: The magnificent three were able to complete wet-sieving of 150 bags in two days. The garden was changed to muddy lagoon. The first result is refitted end scraper - the first part was excavated in March, the second in July.
- 5-6/VIII 2017: All sediment bags were transported to Usti nad Orlici weekend house with large garden.
- 31/VII 2017: The field is slightly plown, the depresssion resulted from removing material is not as large.
- 26/VII 2017: First 25 bags was wet sieved.
- 23/VII 2017: We are utilizing pick for sediment blocks removing. We completed excavation of whole opened area. The number of sediment bags reaches 150 items.
- 22/VII 2017: As the sediment is dry and hard, we are eaxcavating slowly. The part of the sediment is sieved on site and the second part is transported in bags to the Institute. The first half of opened area was completed after 12 hours lasting work.
- 21/VII 2017: We removed topsoil from the area of 10 m2 during a hot afternnon. The find horizon is separated by drying cracks reaching thickness up to 2cm.
- 18/VII 2017: As the barley was harvested two weeks earlier earlier than expected, the excavation of the area opened in March 2017 will continue during July 21-23. We are searching for volunteers (for details see this link in Czech).
- 25/III 2017: The wet sieving of sediments (35 bags) was completed in Rokytna river (on the same spot as Bohunice material 15 years ago). There was not empty bag and some bags consist of several hundreds od small finds including larger pieces (minimally five Levallois points) - look how my office currently loos like (drying of sifted material) and how my hand looks like. A lot of red ochre lumps and burnt flints was found. The barley was already seeded on Ořechov 4 field, our dig can be easily located basing on a shallow depresion.
- 5/III 2017: We documented a hearth surrounded by gullies filled with sediments with hundreds of artifacts and a boiling pit with boiling stones. Although we had 4 sieves, we were not able to wash all sediments and 30 10-litres buckets of sediment were not finished and were transported to Institute. We hope to wash it later under better weather conditions. We can conclude that we excavated an area of 5 x 3 m and found around 1000 artifacts over 2 cm in length and several thousands of small finds.
- 4/III 2017: We transported water in barrels to the sieving unit. We started digging and excavated first in situ artifacts including many of Levallois points and blades. I addition we found quartz hammer stones and red ochre lumps.
- 3/III 2017: We opened an area of 5 x 5 m.
