About the Project


The project "The Great Moravian Empire and 1150 years of Christianity in the Central Europe" with identification code: DF 12P01OVV010 is part of the Programe of Applied Research and Development of National Identity (NAKI) announced and financially supported by the Ministery of Cultere of the Czech Republic for years 2012-2015. It was started on the 1st February 2012 and will last until the end of 2015. The project was recieved by the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences Brno, the Czech Republic and another participant is the Moravian Museum Brno.

The project is aimed to protection, presentation and education in the area of archaeological cultural heritage through activation of so far unpublished finding collections from distingushed Great Moravian sites. Some of the findings count among the national cultural monuments. The principle idea of the project is Christianization of the Great Moravian Empire, joining tangable and intangable national cultural heritage, which requires summary of new knowledge in this area. The topic is especially relevant in occasion of 1150th anniversary of coming of Constantinus and Methodius to the Central European space, which coincides with the year 2013. Foremost there is intention to acquire new knowledge via analyses of so far unpublished material from archaeological terrain researches (e.g. remains of the church buildings from Mikulčice and Staré Město, chemical analyses of building materials, evaluation of Great Moravian graves with evidences of Christianity or paganism etc.). The issue of beginnings of the Christianity will be studied withing wider Eurepean context with special focus on the Central European territories. Acquired new information will be presented in year 2013 on international conference participated by eminent domestic and foreign scientists within the frame of the issue which will be consequently followed by conference proceedings.

The results will be subsequently presented to the general public through uniqe exhibition, taking place in Brno, Prague and Bratislava during the years 2014 and 2015. Among others there will be presented original findings from significant grave goods from the Great Moravian centers as well as peripherals and graphic reconstructions of these graves, tangible reconstructions of selected Great Moravian churches, created using unique technology of resin casting. Farther there will be 3D visualizations of Great Moravian churches (interiors and exteriors) and other atractive exhibits, which are reasonably expected to raise and deepen interest of the general public in cultural heritabe of our country.
