List of recently surveyed sites and areas
- 5/V 2021: I left for field surveys to salvage some of the Spring survey season immediately after the lockdown in my country was relaxed. A Levallois point from the Mohelno area.
- Seasonal greeting. I wish to everybody interested in this web Mary Christmas and a Happy New Year! PF 2021 And here is a 2017 wall calendar showing our underwater digging team.
- 11/XII 2020: We had surveyed the Ořechov IV site and two spots with artifacts within intect sediment were discovered in poughed field ca. 5m from excavated area (western concentration, bucket indicates position of H6).
- 20/XI 2020: We surveyed an area of the Jalovčiny elevation marker located on the cadastral territories of Ořechov, Mělčany, and Silůvky. Beside the lithic asemblade we collected, we found a block with charcoal on the surface of plown field. After the top soil removal, we discovered an in situ pit (30 cm in depth) dug within weathered bedrock (a granodiorite), that was infilled with darker soil with large fragments of charcoal. We immediately documented and excavated that pit. All intact sediments were collected for wet sieving, because the sun was already close to the sunset. As no artifacts were found, the age of this pit will be identified due antrhracological analysis or AMS dating.
- 12-14/IX 2020: More sediments from Švédův stůl cave were transported out of the cave spoil heap for wet sieving.
- 17-21/V 2020: Sediments from Švédův stůl cave were transported to Brno and currently are carefully screened.
- 12-14/V 2020: Immediately after the Covid restrictions begun to release, we continued in reexcavation of Klíma's soil heep deposited in the front of Švédův stůl cave. We dug a large pit and transported sediments in buckets to container. Our small group of academicians dug and trasported 400 buckets (4 cumic meters) to ca. 300 m distant container. The Magdalenian blade represents the most important find before wet sieving.
- 17/IX 2019: An important artifact - the bifacialy worked massive point made from quartz - was found in site LB-d. Middle or Early Paleolithic? Anything else?
- 28/VIII-12/IX 2019: A famous Moravian Neandertal site - the Švédův stůl cave - was re-excavated. Sediments removed during previous champaignes were wet sieved.
- 28/II 2019. A characteristic Bohunican blade showing bidirectional dorsal scars and facetted striking platform, made from SS chert was founsd in GU-F0 site - and unexpected find at that spot.
- 2/X 2018: Survey of the site LPa had resulted in a small collection of artifacts including a Mousterian point and a massive end scraper.
- 4 and 5/IX 2018: The heavy rain washed ploughed fields allowed us to begin with Autumn surveys. The surveys resulted in several collections of artifacts, the most important from sites (we are using codes preventing them from illegal surveys) KU-d, KU-d4, and GU-f.
- As we had recognized unauthorized surveys disturbing our systematic survey program (e.g. survey of Ořechv IV site destructing our 6 years lasting permanent surveying and recording of finds), we significantly limited information available within this page since Spring 2018. The information will be available with a delay or fully censored in the case of key sites or not published sites. Thanks for your understanding. If you need up to date information for scientific purposes, do not hesitate to contact us. Well, we repeatedly surveyed the Ořechov IV site during Spring survey season resulting in a collection of ~1,000 of lithics.
- 17/IV 2018: Ořechob 4, 6, and Hojnarky survey resulted in 76 recorded (using GPS) artifacts and similar number of artifacts were collected directly within 2017-2018 trench that is visible as a shallow depression.
- 16-17/III 2018: The trench in Ořechov 4 (dug in 2017) was enlarged 1m upslope. The total area of 8m2 was excavated in winter conditions on St. Patrick day. The gullies filled by intact sediments documented in 2017 trench were followed. Over 100 artifacts including Levallois products were recorded during excavation. The excavted sediment was collected in plastic bags and transported out of site for wet sieving. Part of sediment was sieved during Easter.
- 31/I 2018: A final report completing 2015-2017 GAČR grant was completed and submitted. A gallery with 3-D models of Líšeň/Podolí I artifacts was made public.
- 13&30/I 2018: We surveyed Ořechov IV and a collection of ca. fifty artifacts was collected in the area of 2017 excavation. In addition a disturbed hearth was documented within eastern part of the site.
- Ořechov IV - a refiting attempt.
- 10/I 2018: A final Monograph summarizing 2015-2017 project was printed!
- Seasonal greeting. I wish to everybody interested in this web Mary Christmass and a Happy New Year! And here is a 2017 wall calendar showing J. Brenner's reconstruction of Stránská skála during GI-12.
- 7-8/VIII 2017: Washing of excavated sediments from Ořechov IV was completed.
- 21-23/VII 2017: The area excavated in Ořechov in spring 2017 was enlarged.
- 26/IV 2017: We surveyed Ořechov IV and a collection of ca. hundred of artifacts was collected in the area of 2017 excavation.
- 21-23/IV 2017: We are trying to pass through finds. All larger artifacts were inventorized (ca. 950 items) and small finds were counted and deposited according to individual squares. We excavated ca. 18 000 items. All finds were typed into database. The collection is characterized by abundand Levallois points, often elongated and a series of microblades / bladelets (ca- 500 items).
- 20/IV 2017: We reported about 2016 (September) and 2017 (March) excavation in Přehledy výzkumů meeting in Brno, Špilberk Castle - Neočekávaně bohaté sídliště bohunicienu mimo brněnskou kotlinu
- 28/II 2017. We surveyed Epigravettian site Horakov-Macocha (nothing found) and Tvarožná X (20 artifacts collected).
- 23/II 2017: We surveyed Ořechov IV and collected 130 artifacts prevailingley within the December 2016 test pits 1-3 area. We documented spatial distribution of disturbed intact sediments and discovered more places with artifacts within intact sediments. We found a nice Levallois point. In addtition, we collected a small collection includin retouched Levallois point from Cretaceous spongolite chert within a satellite concentration IVc.
- January 2017: As the temperarture fals down deeply bellow zero and landscape is covered by snow, the sites are possible to reach only on running ski - Líšeň/Podolí I, Stránská skála, Ořechov 4 and Ořechov 1 were visited.
- 9-10/XII 2016: We surveyed Ořechov 4. The field was deeply plown what unearthed sediments underlying topsoil. Within the area where we discovered artifacts within those sediments were dug three small test pits. We discovered hundreds of artifacts within intact sediments filling shallow depresions in bedrock including a series of Levallois points and red ochre. A good place for excavation in 2017!
- 6-11/XI 2016: A trip to Israel. We visited our colleagues Omry Barzilai and Elisabetta Boaretto excavating in Negev Desert - Boker, Boker Tachtit and Nahal Aquev. We surveyed desert, where artifacts are everywhere, and collected a small collection of Levallois points. In the Northern Israel we visited Carmel Caves - Tabun, El Wad, and Skhul. Of course, we had a swim in Mediteranean, Death and Red Seas.
- 9-11/VIII 2016: Ořechov IV excavation.
- 3/IX 2016: When we surveyed the southern vicinity of the Ořechov IV site, we discovered a small satelite concentration of artifacts that we labeled Ořechov IVd.
- 7-25/VIII 2016: Líšeň/Podolí I excavation.
- 29/IV 2016: We surveyed Líšeň / podolí I site, where we collected 70 artifacts. There is pea seeded in the field and our 2015 trench is still visible.
- 21/IV 2016: We surveyed Ořechov 6 and collected almost 40 artifacts - the number of artifacts from this site reached 300 items.
- 15/IV 2016: As the Tvarožná field is back plown field (after many years covered by alfalfa), we continued survey in order to double surface collection during next several years. Unfortunatelly, field conditions were not suitable for good survey tis year and we collected only 36 artifacts during 2016 Spring surveys.
- 7/IV 2016: We exposed stratigraphic profile in Bohunice (as close as possible to area A), however, we did not find any charcoal and only one isolated artifact. Test pit 3 (currently dry and partially collapsed) may be more suitable for geological observations
- 1/IV 2016: We surveyed Neogéne sediments of Vienna basin near Velké Bílovice - one of possible sources of mollusk shells utilized in Líšeň/Podolí I. We collected sample with prevailng Pirenella picta near the Šísary pond (coordinates: N48 51.926 E16 52.947).
- 18/II 2016: First 2016 survey - in foggy rainy and cold weather - at Ořechov 6 yielded a small colection of artifacts.
- Here is a 2016 wall calendar to the memory of celebration of mollusk shell discovery in Líšeň/Podolí I site.
- Seasonal greeting. I wish to everybody interested in this web Mary Christmass and a Happy New Year! PF2016
- 17/XII 2015: In muddy and rainy weather I visited Líšeň/Podolí I site. I collected 25 artifacts in the vicinity of 2015 dig. The field is ploughed and traces our dig are almost unvisible. The Podolí housing estate is growing causing continuing destruction of the site.
- 16/XI 2015: We surveyed Ořechov-Hojnarky, VI, and Želešice - U Peregrina. The survey resulted in a small collection of artifacts from each of the sites. A view to Želešice III from U Peregrinka site.
- 7-8/XI 2015: We surveyed several sites in the Bobrava valley area (Moravany - U dubu, Ořechov-Hojnarky, IV, VI, VII). The most important results are from Ořechov VI, where we found a distal fragment of elongated (probably) Levallois point and oposed directional core. Another important find is quartz chopping tool with rounded edges resembling a Lower Paleolithic artifact from nearby site Ořechov VII.
- 1/XI 2015: As we want to prepare lithic from Ořechov 4 for publication, we begun work on material. As a first step we sorted lithics according to raw material. As a second step, we are trying to refit broken (by a frost or plough) artifacts. Although a surface nature of collection, we were able to refit several broken pieces including broken Levallois point.
- 15/X 2015: In a rainy, cloudy and cold Autumn weather we surveyed Ořechov 4 site. We collected 150 artifacts in three people. The field was seeded and not well washed. It was almost on the 5th anniversary of the site discovery in 2015, October 21. The result of 5 years lasting systematic survey is visualized in Google Earth image.
- 6/X 2015: A briefly survey Mohelno-Boleniska resulted in a radiolarite leafpoint
- 22/IX A presentation entitled “Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in Moravia: New sites, new dates, new ideas” was presented in “PREHISTORIC HUNTER-GATHERERS AND FARMERS IN THE ADRIATIC AND NEIGHBOURING REGIONS” meeting in Croatia.
- 9/V 2015: We surveyed Skalka u Prostějova site and collected over 100 artifacts during two and half hour long survey. The most important is a Jerzmanowice point. Unfortunately, the field is seeded by alfalfa and lost for Archeologiocal survey for many years.
- 8/V 2015: We visited Lhánice I. Although the field was not washed as much as necessary for successfull survey, we found a Levallois blade from siliceous weathering product.
- 6/V 2015: EUP project was presented in GEPAARD 2015 meeting.
- 27/IV 2015: We visited basalt oucrop at Kokořín. However, the field was in a bad condition and we did not collect any artifact.
- 26/IV 2015: We interrupted our way from Ukraine back to Brno and visited Skalka u Prostějova site. We collected 100 artifacts during one and half hour long survey. The most important is a series of 6 Aurignacian endscrapers and two flakes with facetted striking platforms.
- 25/IV 2015: The result of our refitting is that refitting-ability of collection is limited because of several factors - mainly missing artifacts and solifluction. We were not able to join Levallois points to negatives on related cores. However, three refitted reduction sequences (Photo 1 & Photo 2) document a serial production of Levallois points chracteristic for Moravian Bohunician and Boker Tachtit. Our small team after 9 days of intensive work finished our work and moved material back to Institute.
- 17/IV 2015: We returned to Lviv, where we rented a flat and transported all materials from level IV from the Institute of Archeology depository to that flat. We placed artifact everywhere where possible in flat and start refitting. Unfortunatelly, the currently available material is not complete as mentioned by R. Koropetskyi in his artickle and some 3000 artifacts from the original collection (~12000 items) are missing.
- 14&16/IV 2015: We traveled to Kremenets and opened a trench at Kulichivka site. Again in bad conditions, in rainy and windy wetter. Hill called Kulichivka is located on NW margin of Kremenets town and it is elevated above lowland located to the north (Volynia). It well vissible both from lowland and Kremenets castle. We cleaned profile and recognized all layers 1-4, here is a photo of solifluction containing layers 2-4. We collected charcoal from two lowermost charcoal lenses we belive they are beloging to level IV that is topic of our visit. Our small UA-Czech expedition excavated an area of ca. 4 square metres and reached maximun depth of almost 5 m in two days. Thanks to all participants! An for a lunch prepared in field conditions.
- 9/IV 2015: We returned to the recently discovered site in Ořechov (Lavický's site) that we call Ořechov VI - U kříže (near the wayside cross). We collected a collection of artifacts (we have got over 100 artifacts in total), part of them have calcium coating on their surfaces. We dug a small test pit in the area where calcium carbonate coated artifacts were recorded and we discovered in situ artifacts within intact sediment - calcareous soil sediment. We discovered a new stratified site! Unfortunately no diagnostic artifact was collected yet.
- 7/III 2015: We surveyed an area to the east and northeast from Ořechov I. We documented two artifact clusters mentioned by Lavický in his notebook.
- 18/II 2015. As a snow melt off, I visited Líšeň/Podolí I site. Our test pit (the place of a prepared Summer excavation) is marked by a rucksack. I collected only 5 artifacts - it looks that the site is continually surveyed by any amateur archaeologist (as indicated by a lost glove near our test pit) or exhausted. The most important find was a nickel 20 Heller coin from 1894 (Austrian Empire).
- 28/I 2015. A winter view from Podstránská site to Stránská skála rock. The Líšeň-Čtvrtě site is on the top of elevation behind Stránská skála (between transmitter towers) and Líšeň/Podolí I on the far side of the same elevation.
- 10/VII 2014. The Líšeň/Podolí I field is currently plown and alfalfa is seeded on Tvarožná field.
- Successful fall 2014: Gil received NSF grant for excavating and dating Tvarožná Bohunician site and Petr received GACR grant for excavating Líšeň/Podolí I Bohunician site. It never rains but it pours!
- 30/XI 2014: We surveyed Hradsko site and related Kokořín tephrite outcrop in Bohemia. Unfortunately, both fields were not in suitable conditions.
- 9/XI 2014: We surveyed the Jalovčiny code on the boundary of cadastral teritorries of Silůvky, Mělčany and Ořechov. We enlarged the artifact cluster to the south. I addition, we surveyed Želešice I site where only isolated artifacts were collected.
- 24/X 2014: We surveyed Holubice code near Uničov site. Unfortunately this hiltop site is grassed. However, a collection of 6 artifacts was collected on its northwestern slope, on the cadastral teritorry of Klopina.
- 10/X 2014: I surveyed Skalka near Prostějov site. A collection of 26 artifacts was collected.
- 3/X 2014: I visited Ořechov 4 site again. The field was seeded (oilseed rape plantswere already 5 cm in height) and well washed. Four hours lasting survey resulted almost in 300 recorded artifacts and several lumps of red ochre. In addition, a small "satelite" concentration of artifacts (probably Aurignacian) was dfound ca. 200m to the northwest from the site and an isolated artifact was foun on the top of ridge ca. 100m to the north from the site. A view from the satelite site to the Ořechov main site is here.
- 29/VIII 2014: We visited Ořechov 4 site. The field is harrowed and is ready for seeding. Four hours lasting survey resulted only in 140 artifacts. The small number of collected artifacts was partly influenced by unfavorable conditions (surface was not sufficiently washed) and partly that the site was surveyed by somebody else before us.
- 6/VI 2014: We visited Bratčice site for a little bit of time and collected a small collection of artifacts between corn rows.
- 26/V 2014: We visited Karlukovo karst area, where we visited Prohodna cave and closed Temnata dupka cave.
- 22-23/V: We visited Sofia and studied materials from Temnata dupka transitional layers. Although we documented a series of artifacts with biderectional dorsal scar pattern and facetted strikng platform (including Levallois points), the general impression differs from Boker Tachtit and Bohunician assemblages.
- 10/V 2014: We visited plattensilex outcrop in Bavaria, Germany. The otcrop is situated on a small elevation near Arnhofen. In a wall of deserted quary is possible to see plates in primary position.
- 2/IV 2014: I surveyed Orechov 4. The field was dry, not washed, with growing green barley. The recorded track was 6.5km as long and resulted in 244 artifacts recorded using GPS. The collection of artifacts include Levallois flakes, blade endscraper and carinated burin.
- 26-27/III 2014: We surveyed Brehov area within Zemplínské vrchy at Eastern Slovakia for obsidian outcrops.
- 23/XI 2013: We surveyed tephrite outcrops at Kokořín area. We focussed on tephrite vein above Šemanovice dyke recently identified as a source for tools knapped in Hradsko site. We found an isolated artifact with white patina and several tephrite flakes (not neccessarily of Paleolithic age). The hypothesis that this particular outcrop was utilized by Hradsko knappers was confirmed.
- 13/XI 2013: We visited site Ořechov 4, where we dug a series of test pits in order to discover another hearth. The field was deeply plough and in its parts the bedrock sediments were disturbed and visible on surface. At one such place the charcoal was found on surface. When we removed ploughsoil, we discovered the first hearth, respectively its sunken bottom in bedrock. In second test pit were documented only lenses of charcoal with isolated artifact. The second hearth was discovered in third test pit. In addition we surveyed field and collected over 150 artifacts including two Levallois points.
- 31/X 2013: In colaboration with Peter Milo from Masaryk University, we realized geophysical (magnetometry) survey in order to locate hearths. With a high tention we are waiting for results ...
- 8/X 2013: We surveyed Lhánice-Jezera and Mohelno-Boleniska sites. We found only several artifacts.
- 7/X 2013: We surveyed Ořechov 4 site from where we collected almost 100 artifacts. In addition, we completed our test about artifact movement within plough zone - we collected our experimental metals by metal detector. After two years, experimental metals were scattered within an elipse with dimensiona 6 x 3 m.
- 3/VII 2013: We visited Hydroelectric power plant headquarters below the dam of Dalešice water reservoir, where we discussed conditions for Plevovce salvage excavation. The excavation is preliminarily planed during second week of September. Later that day we visited the site of Mohelno-Plevovce. Although partially flooded (unfortunately including stone structures), we surveyed erosion chanels from where we collected a small collection of artifacts including backed microblade with straight truncation (rectangle) from concentration 2. Because this artifact is characteristic for Magdalenian, the cultural clasification of site is more difficult.
- 12/VI 2013: We visited the site of Mohelno-Plevovce, where we surveyed erosion chanels and collected a small collection of artifacts including bidirectional core from concentration 2. The main aim of survey was to document an extent of erosion of stone structures discovered last year. We found washed artifacts including several pieces of rock crystal. We turned one of the stones and discovered a pit filled by black soil including small artifacts, weathered reindeer teeth, red ochre, chared bones and charcoal - finally we have material for radiocarbon dating! In addition, we visited nearby located site Mohelno-Boleniska and collected a small collection of finds.
- 29/V 2013: We continued survey at Bratčice - near a wayside cross.
- 16/V 2013: We surveyed Zemplínské vrchy at Eastern Slovakia for obsidian outcrops again.
- 6/V 2013: We surveyed Bratčice - near a wayside cross (see that the Szeletian sites are identified by a wayside cross) and collected a collection of over 100 artifacts recorded by GPS. The most important find represents a broken Jerzmanowice-type point.
- 26/IV 2013: We surveyed Zemplínské vrchy at Eastern Slovakia for obsidian outcrops. We were successful! We collected a sample of obsidian pebbles with corroded surface. The important find is a collection of flakes and cores with intensively coroded flaking scars.
- 18/IV 2013: We surveyed Bratčice - near a wayside cross and collected a collection of over 40 artifacts recorded by GPS. The most important find represents a leaf point made from Cretaceous spongolite chert.
- 8/IV 2013: Snow is melting fast and it is time to prepare and be ready to start surveys.
- 6/IV 2013: We finished refitting of Želešice material and wait for raw material identification (we asked A. Přichystal for microscopic determination).
- 1/III 2013: We surveyed Ořechov 4 and found over 100 artifacts.
- 30/I 2013: We are working with Želešice material. Although we refited several important broken artifacts, we were not successfull in completing production sequences.
- 9/1 2013: We surveyed Hradsko in Bohemia, where snow cover had melted for first weeks in Jannuary. We collected over 40 artifacts from an eastern (accesssible) part of the site.
- Although the GA AVČR grant had finished with 2012, we still continue ...
- Happy New Year 2013! In addition, find an Archaeological wall calendar with Czech names of Months and Czech holidays.
- 29/XI 2012: We continued excavation at the site of Podstránská. We enlarged our test pit from Summer 2012 and excavated another square meter. We found a small collection of over 60 artifacts including items with faceted striking platform..
- 28/XI 2012: We continued surveys at Mohelno area. We visited site of Plevovce, where we collected small collections of artifacts from all 3 stratified concentrations. We started our survey from very early morning, just after the sun rise, when water level was low, and documented continual erosion of sediments and washing of stone pavement. The possible stone pavement (flat stones) was recognized such within the stratified concentration 2. Two hours later, the stone pavement was floaded by rising water. In addition, we visited nearby located sites Mohelno-Boleniska and Lhánice-Jazera and on both of them collected a small collection of finds.
- 21/XI 2012: We dug a second test pit at the site Bratčice - near a wayside cross. We documented paleosols within loess. Only one artifact was found on the uppermost part of soil. In addition, we opened a small trench at Ořechov 4. We documented only isolated charcoal.
- 12-16/XI 2012: We visited Olexander Sytnyk in Lvov. We studied material from the site of Kulichivka, which is made of an attractive and a high quality Cretaceous (Turonian) flint. The material from layers 4 and 3 shows characteristic features of emiro-bohunician technocomplex including a frontal crest preparation of cores, precise faceting of striking platform and opposed directional reduction resulting in a production of Levallois points. The share of Levallois implements decrease and contrary the share of UP endscrapers increase in level 3 comparing to level 4. We visited the Kulichivka site, unfortunately in a foggy day. We collected flint samples. On the return trip we crossed Carpathians and visited Szeleta cave, where we had guided trip with Gyorgy Lengyel. Later we met Zsolt Mester in Budapest for a brief introduction to the issue of bifacial reduction.
- 9/XI 2012: On the return trip we made a detour to avoid Prague traffic jams and we briefly visited the Kokořín area where we continued surveys interrupted by a snowfall two weeks ago. A basalt outcrop south of Kanina was relocated and a collection of Neolithic artifacts was collected at the same spot. Another basalt oucrop with fine-grained basalt suitable for knapping was relocated above Šemanovický důl.
- 8-9/XI 2012: We visited Mikolaj Urbanowski in Szczecin, who is excavating Stajnia cave in Central Poland. Some of the artifacts differ from the characteristically MP toolkit. Those artifacts are bladey, elongated and produced using Levallois technique resembling Bohunician. Stratigraphically, those artifacts were excavated from the upper part of the MP sequence.
- 1/XI 2012: In a cold, wet and windy Halloween weather, we had visited Moravany-Dlhá site at western Slovakia. Under rain falls and a strong wind, in a muddy stuff, we dug a series of test pits. Warmed by alcohol and a fire, we had discovered and recorded positions of former (most probably Bárta's) trenches and excavated isolated artifacts. In addition, a series of artifacts was collected on surface.
- 25-28/X 2012: Expedition to the Kokořín area. We had visited a sandstone area northern from Prague, Bohemia. We had surveyed the site of Hradsko, from where we collected a small collection of lithics. In addition, we surveyed important locations similar to Hradsko in its vicinity. However, no artifacts were found. Simultaneously, we had sampled basalt (part of lithics within Hradsko knapped assemblage) outcrops in the area. Unfortunately, our survey was suddenly finished by snow falls.
- 8/X 2012: We had surveyed the site Bratčice - near a wayside cross and collected a collection of over 50 artifacts recorded by GPS. A test pit dug within a concentration of artifacts with traces of calcium carbonate on their surfaces yielded two artifacts from intact soil sediments. The site has a potential for future test pitting.
- 8/X 2012: We had continued the survey of Mohelno Plevovce site. In muddy staff we set a permanent grid and documented structures constructed from flat stones (pavement? walls?) and isolated stones and artifacts nearby those structures. The documentation will periodically continue as sediments will be removed by fluctuating water level.
- 16/VIII 2012: We had visited the site of Mohelno-Plevovce again. The water level was lower comparing to yesterday and our test pit visible; however water was rising up slowly. We surveyed in a hurry still dry water chanelas and discovered another concentration of Paleolithic artifacts within intact sediments. The artifacts include endscraper refited from two parts collected from distance of 1 m. However, rising up water soon filled the findspot. Therefore we had measured thickness of removed sediments. We finished when rissing up water touched our tripod ...
- 15/VIII 2012: We had re-cleaned Želeč Test pit 1 profile, where charcoal sample resulted in 39,8 kya was colledted from. Only one artifact was found on boundary between soil sediment and underlying sand. In addition we had visted site Mohelno-Plevovce, where a water level was too high and our test pit with piles of excavated sediments was possible only to feel under water.
- 9/V 2012: The site Ořechov 4 was surveyed and that survey resulted in a collection over 300 artifacts.
- 9/V 2012: The site Lhánice I was surveyed and survey resulted in a collection of artifacts including another leafpoint.
- 18/IV 2012: After twoo weeks the sites Lhánice I and II were surveyed and another leaf poit was found on the site I.
- 19/IV 2012: The site Želešice III was surveyed and a leaf poit was found
- 2/IV 2012: The sites Lhánice I and II were surveyed and a nice leaf poit was found on the site I. In addition, we visited site Mohelno Plevovce where new errosion chanels weres documented
- 30/III-1/IV: We washed sediments from Pod hradem cave.
- 10/II 2012: Material from the sites Lhánice 1 and Lhánice 2 deposited in Třebíč Museum was revised.
- 24/I 2012: We participated on the Neolithic excavation at Rozdrojovice.
- 12-14/2012: The first 2012 survey was realized under cold conditions supplemented by snow showers. We relocalized sites Lhánice 1 and Lhánice 2 published by Oliva and collected several artifacts from each. Several artifacts were collected at Mohelno-Boleniska, where we discovered disturbed settlement feature of Bell Beaker Culture. In addition, we collected over 160 artifacts from Ořechov 4 and several artifacts from Mělčany/Ořechov/Silůvky-Jalovčiny site.

- 22-23/IX 2011: We continued surwey at the site Ořechov IV from where we collected over 400 artifacts including Levallois implements and foud a small "satelite" concentration of artifacts (including a leaf-point) more to the east. We enlarged test pit 2 where we found another hearth, unfortunately with no artifacts. We surveyed nearby elevation marker Líchy where found two artifacts.
- 1-17/VIII: Excavation at Želešice-Hoynerhügel.
- 25&28/VII 2011: We dug two test pits and located position of Želešice 2010 profile. We are ready to start Želešice 2011 excavation and connect it to 2010 coordinate system. In addition we start surveys in Ořechov IV Bohunician site from where over 200 artifacts was collected. The test pits dug on the margin of surface artifact cluster documented charcoal lenses on the boundary between colluvial calcanerous sediments and weathered bedrock.
- 1/6 2011: We enlarged (removed topsoil and upper loess) the area excavated in 2010 in Ondratice and prepared it for excavation (planed for end of June).
- We continued cleaning profile at Bohunice and survey in Mohelno.
- 22/5 2011: We continued cleaning profile at Bohunice from where we have collected 11 artifacts recorded in 3D. The aim of cleaning was to fix holes from OSL samples, positions of artifacts and stratigraphy in the same coordinate system.
- 20/5 2011: We realized a series of test pits on the border of water reservoir in Mohelno from where artifacts were recorded in washed sediments. We cleaned several profiles, however, the stratigraphical position of artifacts within documented layers was not solved. The location of the site on elevation above river was well suitable for human occupation and Palaeolithic, Neolithic Aneolithic and Medieval occupation was documented.
- 9/5 2011: We surweyed site Ořechov II from where we collected over 180 artifacts.
- 2&4/5 2011: We continued survey at Bobrava area, where we visited sites Želešice III, Ořechov V & Ořechov/Mělčany/Silůvky-kóta 333.8 (Lavicky Berg).

We visited also Ondratice II site, from where we colected a small collection of artifacts including three polyhedral burins.
- 11&13/1 2011: Melting snow allowed us to make the first 2011 survey. We surveyed sites Ořechov 1 & 4. The field surface suggested a permafrost, the upper 10 cm was melted and muddy, underlaying horizon still frozen. It was cold, foggy, no good visibility, but white patinated artifacts were well visible on brown soil, sometimes such under watter. Tereza found such a leaf point made of red radiolarite on the site of Ořechov 1. The collection from the site of Ořechov 4 is a nice Bohunician with no doubt. We collected over 200 artifacts positions of which were recorded in GPS and we would like to continue survey after harvest.
- 2011: I wish a happy and successful new year to all my field collaborators as well as to all readers of this web. PF2011

- 21/X 2010: We continued survey at Ořechov 4 and in addition we found 2 artifacts at Modřice 4.
- 21/X 2010: We continued survey of Borava River Valley sites. We were enjoyed from rediscovering Lavický's site Ořechov 4 (mistakenly located by Oliva 1989 ca.1,2 km away). This surface site (unfortunately artifacts are collected together with fragments of bedrock) yielded a collection of 130 Bohunician artifacts including 7 Levallois artifacts. Prevailing raw material is Stránská skála-type chert. We realized such a bore hole at the site of Ořechov 4. In the depth of 80 cm bellow the surface we documented Miocene sands overlying by a thin layer of colluvial sediments. Both sands and colluvial sediments are rich in calcium - and the both are possible source of calcium carbonate on the collected artifacts surfaces.
- 14/X 2010: We continued survey at the northern slopes of Ždánický les under umpleasant conditions due of cold and foggy Autumn weather. Afternoon the fog had disappered and we collected in a nice sunny day. Also some fields were still not harvested, or not plough, or recently worked. We visited several elevations (Těšany 285.9 Elevation marker, Borkovany-Veselá hora, Otnice-Malý sádkový vrch, Hostěrádky-Rešov-Stará hora) from where no artifacts were collected. We collected small collections of artifacts from Bošovice-Příděl u háječka (together with Neolithic finds), Lovčičky-Novosady and Křestánov.

- From 2010, August 2, we start excavation. For details see The excavation page.
- 11 and 15/VI 2010: We have continued excavation of Ondratice/Zelec site. We have excavated first subsectors up to bedrock. We have observed a concentration of charcoal resembling hearth on the bottom of trnch and we have found one artifact from washed sediments collected from that charcoal concentration during wet sieving.
- 13/V 2010: We had started topsoil and upper loess removing in the area 3x2 m supposed for excavation at Želeč. We have found a first artifact in the uppermost part of the soil sediment - a radiloarite flake. Had been Absolon true with two layers?
- 30/IV 2010: We continued survey of Ondratice/Želeč site. We collected only a small collection of artifacts. We cleaned profile of test pit Zel_T04 with hearth and started removing topsoil.
- 29/IV 2010: We dug a small test pit in Lisen. We excavated only a small collection of Aurignacian artifacts including characteristic carinated endscrapers and tiny bladelets from paleosol.

- 9/IV 2010: We continued survey of Ondratice/Zelec site. We collected and recorded position of ca. 300 artifacts (currently the total number of recorded artifacts reaches 750). We continued in cleaning the test pit 4 profile from where we have a massive quartz flake directly from the soil-sediment/sand boundary.
- 30/III 2010: One test pit was dug at Oliva's site Podolí I. In depth of 80 cm within intact sediments we cut a find horizon containing artifacts (density 70 artifacts per square meter) and scattered charcoal. Very promising area for Summer excavation! Our small excavating team had a lot of green beers for celebrating our succes.
- 30/III 2010: Three test pits were dug at Líšeň-Čtvrtě. None artifacts within intact sediments were found.
- 24 and 26/III 2010: We continued in surface survey at Želeč/Ondratice site. Ondra had found a leaf point.
- 17/III 2010: We surveyed the site of Želeč and collected a collection of artifacts made from Drahany-quartzite, Moravian cherts, radiolarite, and eratic flint. Important is a series of endscrapers (end scraper 1, endscraper 2).
- 17/III 2010: We surveyed the site of Hluchov, where a bone Mladeč-type point was refered from. We found only one Paleolithic artifacts and documented calcareous intact sediments in the area.
- 10/III 2010: Under very cold conditions we have surveyed the site of Želešice and collected a collection of artifacts including radiolarite end scraper. We dug such two test pits which yielded no artifacts.
- 17/XII 2009: Two test pits were dug in frozen field at Podolí I site. We found calcareous soil sediment bellow the topsoil with scattered charcoal but no artifacts.
- 8/XII 2009: We have realized a mechanically dug test pit in Zelec. The test pit is 65m as long and ca. 1 m deep and 1 m wide. In the walls were documented several features resembling hearths. Hearts were not associated with artifacts. Only isolated artifacts were collected within removed sedimments.
- 24/XI 2009: We surveyed the area of Želešice. We collected a seris of artifacts including tools. On of test pits yielded two artifacts in intact sediments located close bellow the plough soil.
- 20/XI 2009: We visited Ondratice sand pit and discussed with owner the posibility to make a long profile using scraper. Two backets were filled by sediments and wet sieved (no finds).
- 12&19/XI 2009: Surface surveys were realized at the cadastral teritories of Křepice and Nikolčice. We identified site Křepice and dicovered two new sites at Nikolčice - Liščí vrch & Vinohrady. A view to the Palava (to the south) and to the Výhon & the Brno Basin (to the north) from the newly discovered site.
- 10/XI 2009: Surface surveys were realized at the cadastral teritories of Ořechov, Hajany, and Želešice. New collections were obtained from the sites Ořechov II, Hahany I and other unnamed location & Želešice-Hajanský (Hoyner Hügel, III). Artifacts were recorded using GPS and the absolute coordinates of sites were fixed. A test pit dug on the yet secret site on the cadastral teritory of Želešice yielded one stratified artifact together with scattered charcoal within intact and calcareous soil sedimnents.
- 27/X 2009: Surface surveys were realized at the cadastral teritories of Modřice and Želešice. The isolated artifacts were found at the sites Modřice-Na kopci a Želešice-Kozí horka. Artifacts were recorded using GPS and the absolute coordinates of sites were fixed.

- 24/IV 2009: An isolated artifact was found on a large flat elevation east of Tvarožná: Kovalovice-Na rovinách.
- 24/IV 2009: We surveyed the area of Ondratice I site. When we examined the material eroding from profiles in the uppermost part of theOndratice sand-pit, we collected Paleolithic artifacts at three locations. We cleaned the profiles at those find-spots and recorded the stratigraphy. We also dug three test pits. One of the test pits yielded charcoal lenses in paleosol. Unfortunately, no artifacts were found in intact sediments. However, the presence of charcoal within paleosol and the discovery of isolated artifacts found at the three locations, is promising for future surveys. All described find-spots are located in the cadastral territory of Želeč.
We also surveyed a nearby elevation Horka. An isolated artifact (microchip) was found within recently redeposited loessic sediments on the edge of an active quarry Brodek u Prostějova-Hůrka. The site was already reported by Skutil, butthe salvage excavation conducted by Berkovec yielded no Paleolithic artifacts.
- 2-3/IV 2009. Surface surveys were realized at the sites of Dubicko (several artifacts were found in the fields but no loessic sediments) and Třebom (several artifacts were collected here on a glacier moraine).
- Surface survey 24/III 2009: We continued the survey of the northern margin of the Ždánický les uppland. New collections were obtained from Lovčičky-Pod cibulkami and Heršpice-Dlouhé. Newly discovered sites include Heršpice-Borový and Kobeřice-Nad vinohrady. All find-spots are surface sites with weathered bedrock or colluvial sediments bellow the topsoil.
- Surface survey 19/III 2009: Sites Letkovice-Ve žlebích and Mohelno-Boleniska were visited. No intact layers were documented.
- 10/III 2009 - we joined the UAPP team in excavating the Neolithic site of Horákov. Two leaf points have been reportedfrom the site. We documented loess at the site, but no in situ Paleolithic artifacts were found.
- 20/II 2009 - Running ski trip to Stránská skála, Líšeň, and Podolí. A view from Stránská skála towards Líšeň (the site is located between the transmissions towers).
- Líšeň-Čtvrtě. We conducted surface surveys with Petr Matějec and excavated test pits (19/IX 2008) at the location where Petr reported artifacts covered by calcium carbonate and fossil horse teeth. The attempt was successful and the first test pit LC01 yielded 6 artifacts in disturbed paleosol in an area of 0.5 m2. We subsequently excavated a test pit 5 m downslope (LC02) and 5 m upslope (LC03). The palosol with artifacts was not found in the downslope test pit, but the upslope test pit contained in situ paleosol covered by a thin loess layer and yielded 2 artifacts. We will continue with digging test pits, and are planning a small-scale excavation for summer 2009.
- Surface survey 27/V 2008: The northern margin of Ždánický les uppland, left bank of Litava River between Slavkov and Újezd u Brna were surveyed. A new site was discovered at Heršpice-Dlouhé. Isolated artifacts were found at Milešovice-U kříže, Otnice-Bába (near elevation marker 287.9 m), and Lovčičky-Pod cibulkami. All find spots are surface sites - with weathered bedrock bellow the topsoil.
- April, cadastral territories-fields surveyed : Hodějice-Vinohrad, Komořany na Moravě-Nad remízkem, Lůsy, Malé strany, Dražovice-vodojem, Letonice-Mezi hájky - ALL negative results
